Submissions for the Fourth Summit on New Media Art Archiving have now closed.
ISEA2024 is organising the Fourth Summit on New Media Art Archiving in partnership with the ISEA Symposium Archives, the Archive of Digital Art (ADA), the archive for the Histories of Media Art, the ZKM archives, the SIGGRAPH History Archive, the Electronic Language International Festival (FILE) archives, the MEMODUCT posthuman archive and ISEA International, and is endorsed by Ars Electronica The Summit will be an integral section of ISEA2024, the 29th International Symposium on Electronic Art.
The summit will be held at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre from 24-26 June 2024.
History
After the massive support for the Liverpool declaration (http://www.mediaarthistory.org/declaration), the initiative started with ISEA round table discussions on new media archiving at ISEA2018 in Durban, South Africa and ISEA2019 in Gwangju, South Korea. The 1-day First Summit on New Media Art Archiving was held during ISEA2020, (online from Montreal, Canada) featuring a keynote lecture, paper presentations, and break-out sessions. This Second Summit on New Media Art Archiving was held during 2 days preceding ISEA2022 in Barcelona, Spain and the Third Summit, also two days, during ISEA2023 in Paris, France. The third Summit was held over 2 days at ISEA2023 in Paris. Subjects included, among others, archiving physical artifacts, digitizing museum collections, and innovative approaches to archiving, as well as an emphasis on connecting new media art archives worldwide.
Submissions for the summit must align with one of the below topics:
Topic one: relevant sub themes of ISEA2024
Relevant sub themes of ISEA204 in relation to archiving. Examples include ‘culturally safe virtual spaces’, ‘machine learning as a co-creator’, ‘transmedia storytelling’, ‘digital museology, cultural heritage and archaeological reconstruction’ and ‘all modes of augmented, mixed, extended and virtual realities from interactive digital worlds to metaverse’.
Topic two: making the Summit a sustainable event
So far, the Summits have been an initiative of the ISEA archivists, who are all volunteers. They have worked without financial means and at the cost of their regular archiving work. How can we give the Summit a more structural basis? What stakeholders would be willing to invest in it? How do we convince these stakeholders to do so? In short we ask for analysis and strategy proposals.
Topic three: ideas and proposals to help the Connecting Archives project
As a result of the first Summit, an initiative was started to connect New Media Art archives around the World. The rationale, aims and history of the project was described in 3 papers, presented during the Second and Third Summit*. Paper and panel proposals are invited that will bring the project a step forward.

The Fourth Summit on New Media Art Archiving is accepting submissions for the following presentation types:
Papers (peer-reviewed)
We invite submissions for original and substantial research, both traditional and non-traditional, that has not been previously published. Full papers can be 5-8 pages using the provided template. Short papers can be 2-4 pages using the provided template.
All papers must follow the academic template and will undergo double-blind peer review by the International Program Committee (IPC) based on quality, relevance, originality, and impact.
The Academic Committee and Program Chairs will make the final decision on acceptance, taking into account the review recommendations. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings and the ISEA archives. Authors will be required to present their papers at the Symposium, with a duration of 15-30 minutes including Q&A session. The Academic Committee or Program Chairs may invite authors to participate in other publication outcomes from the symposium and/or recommend for other tracks in the program.
Please ensure that your submitted PDF is anonymised, with no author-related information such as institutional affiliation, bio, author name(s), or explicit self-citations, notes, and bibliography included in the body text.
Panel discussion (peer-reviewed)
We invite submissions for Panel discussions, which should include an introduction and abstracts from up to 5 individual panel members. Following the academic template, panel discussions can be 2-4 pages in length.
All panels will undergo double-blind peer review by members of the International Program Committee (IPC) based on quality, relevance, originality, and impact.
The Academic Committee will make the final decision on acceptance, taking into account the recommendations of the IPC. Accepted panel abstracts will be published in the conference proceedings and on the ISEA archive. Each panel will be allotted up to 40 minutes in the program, including a Q&A session.
To ensure impartiality, please anonymize your PDF submission by excluding any author-related information, such as institutional affiliation, bio, author name(s), and explicit self-citations, notes, and bibliography in the body text.
New Media Art Archive presentation
New Media Art Archives are invited to present their work at the Summit. Following the academic template, these submissions can be 2-4 pages in length. Submissions will not be double-blind peer reviewed but will be reviewed by the International Program Committee (IPC) for relevance to the summit topics (is the archive relevant for New Media Art/Cultural Heritage?). The archive presentations will be allotted 5 minutes in the program.
Submissions do not need to be anonymised.

Academic template
The academic template is to be used for the following submission types: short paper, full paper, panel discussion and archive presenations.
Using the academic template, submissions for the following presentation types should not exceed the page limits listed below:
- Full papers can be 5-8 pages.
- Short papers can be 2-4 pages.
- Panel discussions can be 2-4 pages.
- New Media Art Archive presentations can be 2-4 pages.
File size
Using the online submission portal, authors will be asked to upload their submission (using the appropriate template) as a single PDF file. This PDF file must not exceed 8,000KB (8MB).
There will be a section within the submission process where authors can also provide a URL link to their submission as a larger higher-resolution version.
Peer-review
ISEA is a peer-reviewed conference with all eligible submissions being double-blind peer-reviewed. Accepted submissions will be published in the conference proceedings and the ISEA archives.
Academic submissions for the following peer-reviewed presentation types should be anonymised by excluding any author-related information: short paper, full paper and panel discussion. Accepted authors will be asked to submit a final version with all author details included for publication.
Academic submissions for the following presentation types do NOT need to be anonymised: archive presentations.
Timeline
The call for academic submissions will close at midnight on Tuesday, 21 November 2023 AEST.
Submitting authors will be notified the outcome of their submission by late January 2024.
All peer-reviewed submissions will have until midnight on Thursday, 29 February 2024 AEST to resubmit a final version for publication.
All presenting authors will be required to have a paid registration by Friday, 22 March 2024. If any presenting authors have not registered by this date the presentation will be withdrawn from the program.
Instruction to authors
- Only submissions submitted through the online submission portal will be considered.
- All submissions must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference.
- We request that all submissions are formatted to the guidelines using the templates provided.
- The official language of the event is English. Submissions must be written in English.
- All submissions must be accompanied with a signed copyright form available here.
- Academic proposals for the following peer-reviewed presentation types should be anonymised by excluding any author-related information: short paper, full paper, panel discussion.
Accepted authors will be asked to submit a final version with all author details included for publication. - Academic proposals for the following presentation types do NOT need to be anonymised: archive presentations.
