Academic submissions have now closed.

The ISEA2024 academic conference will reflect on the theme, Everywhen. Exploring the interrelations between place time and story through papers, panels, demos, institutional presentations, artist talks, keynotes and workshops, constituting a meeting point for artists, scientists, technologists and theorists to share their research and work.

We invite submissions which respond to the theme, Everywhen, and the sub-themes: Ecologies of place, Shifting temporalities, Resilient stories, and Speculative practices.

If we conceptualise the Everywhen  as a constellation of thought, then the source is the artistic and academic generosity of the ISEA community, as it engages, imagines and explores a multitude of temporal-spatial potentialities.  In this spirit we welcome submissions that challenge the traditional academic paper format,  sharing of ideas through storytelling, visual essays, and other innovative modalities.

We encourage all submissions that discuss how the theme of Everywhen, and notions of place, time and story emerge and are explored within the fields of electronic arts, creative technology, digital culture and all manners of art-science-technology collaboration not yet born.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited by:

  • Computational media art as a critical and constructive intervention to the ongoing construction of social reality
  • Culturally safe virtual spaces
  • Creative robotics and human-machine partnerships
  • The politics of machine learning algorithms and other new optical regimes
  • Machine learning as a co-creator
  • Bio-art and artificial life
  • Theories of post-image, new aesthetics, and computer vision
  • Media art archiving
  • Posthuman, transhuman, and ’more than human’ paradigms
  • Transmedia storytelling
  • Indigenous futures
  • Digital museology, cultural heritage and archaeological reconstruction
  • ‘Bleeding edge’ concepts from art-science-technology
  • Tactical media for social good
  • All modes of augmented, mixed, extended and virtual realities from interactive digital worlds to metaverse
  • Art-science collaborations and practices.
  • New approaches to artistic research and creative practice-based methodologies.

ISEA2024 will be held between 21-29 June 2024. The academic conference will be held at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre from 24-26 June 2024. Workshops and artist talks will be held at other venues before or after the academic conference.

The academic program is accepting submissions for the following presentation types:

Papers (peer-reviewed)

We invite submissions for original and substantial research, both traditional and non-traditional, that has not been previously published. Full papers can be 5-8 pages using the provided template. Short papers can be 2-4 pages using the provided template.

Pictorials / Visual Essays (peer-reviewed)

In addition to traditional academic papers, ISEA2024 will accept submissions where visual images (photographs, renderings, illustrations, sketches, collages etc) are essential in communicating research insights, methodologies and contributions to knowledge. We welcome submissions that critically engage with the use of images in research and scholarship, and that explore the possibilities and challenges of using images to convey complex ideas and arguments. Submissions can be in the form of visual essays, photo essays, or other types of image-based presentations.

All pictorials must follow the pictorial template and not exceed 10 pages, excluding references. Pictorial submissions will be peer-reviewed, and the Academic Committee and Program Chairs will decide on acceptance, considering the review recommendations. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings and the ISEA archive. Authors will be required to present their papers at the Symposium, with a duration of 20-40 minutes including Q&A session.

We invite submissions for Panel discussions, which should include an introduction and abstracts from up to 5 individual panel members. Following the academic template, panel discussions can be 2-4 pages in length.

All panels will undergo double-blind peer review by members of the International Program Committee (IPC) based on quality, relevance, originality, and impact.
The Academic Committee will make the final decision on acceptance, taking into account the recommendations of the IPC. Accepted panel abstracts will be published in the conference proceedings and on the ISEA archive. Each panel will be allotted up to 40 minutes in the program, including a Q&A session.

To ensure impartiality, please anonymize your PDF submission by excluding any author-related information, such as institutional affiliation, bio, author name(s), and explicit self-citations, notes, and bibliography in the body text.

Artist talks, work in progress, demonstrations and other non-peer-reviewed presentations

We welcome submissions for artist talks, work in progress, demonstrations, and other non-peer-reviewed contributions. Following the academic template, these submissions can be 2-4 pages in length.

The Academic Committee and Program Chairs will review all submissions and select those to be included in the conference proceedings. These submissions will be allocated up to 20 minutes in the program, including a Q&A session if appropriate.

Unlike peer-reviewed submissions, there is no need to anonymize your submission for non-peer-reviewed contributions.

Institutional presentations, forums and other proposals

We invite institutions, organisations, and community groups to participate in ISEA by presenting their work related to the symposium’s themes and mission. Institutional presentations provide an opportunity for networking and a platform to discuss the institutional mission, research, and creative agendas relevant to the institution and broader community.

Following the academic template, these submissions can be 2-4 pages in length.  Submissions will be reviewed by the Academic Committee for relevance to the ISEA mission and the 2024 symposium theme. Presentations will be allotted up to 45 minutes in the program and may include posters, demonstrations, or other materials. If you have specific space requirements for larger-format demonstrations and displays, please specify them in your submission. We will do our best to cater to your needs.

Submissions do not need to be anonymized. Institutional presentations will be selected by the Steering Committee based on their relevance to the ISEA mission and their ability to serve as networking opportunities and forums for museums, NGOs, networks, schools, enterprises, and other participating organisations.
